Whether you know it or not, you are making “Vastu” decisions everyday! As soon as you wake up, you think, “What am I going to wear today?” Something in your subconscious knows that the colors, the proportions of the lengths of your trousers in relation to your shirt, and the actual design of the outfit will make a difference in the activity that you have planned for that day. In other words, choosing a fluorescent-colored running outfit will not be appropriate for a business meeting with high level executives in the board room.
Even though the actual word Vastu in Sanskrit means a dwelling or a house, the word may be applied to all areas of life and not just a home. The Vastu Shastra are known to be ancient manuals of architecture, shastra meaning books or manuals containing knowledge in a certain subject. Therefore, Vastu Shastra may be thought of solely explaining architecture, yet, knowledge found in those manuals are ‘all-pervasive’, explaining the ‘architecture of everything’. The word architecture actually means the planning, designing, and construction of any structure. Are not our bodies not a structure? Look at our skeleton, is it not an amazingly designed structure that holds all our soft tissues in place? And the universe in which we live in not a perfectly designed structure?
We must expand our paradigm and begin to see that we live within a world in which everything, every creature, every plant, tree, animal, the list is endless, has been perfectly designed. There is Sacred Geometry embedded in every naturally occurring object in this world that can be replicated and designed by man, even our homes! We cannot limit Vastu to homes, yet, it is the most popular use of Vastu because we live in our homes. Our homes are a microcosm replicate of the vaster universe, the macrocosm. That is why the famous saying says in Sanskrit, “Yat pinde, Tat Brahmānde”, which means, “As Above, So Below.” This is why Vastu is also known as “Nature’s Architect”.
To answer the question, “What is Vastu?”: Vastu is everything, Vastu is in everything, Vastu is a living body of knowledge that seeks to educate the modern man to the fact that we are all interconnected with nature. In fact, we are interconnected, period! Quantum Physics can now scientifically prove that humans are physically (via the atomic structures of our bodies) interconnected, namely known as quantum non locality, whereby your actions can affect other beings, even if you are not in close proximation of the other being.
It is amazing that the wise men of yesteryear knew of such phenomenon thousands of years ago, whereas modern science is only beginning to discover the fringes of this vast wisdom most recently. It is exciting that we live in a time that we are finally beginning to give credence to a vast wealth of knowledge that already exists and is waiting to be rediscovered. This is Vastu, an incredible combination of magic, art, and science surrounding the designs of our homes. It is begging us to go back to nature and align our homes, thereby ourselves, with nature.
It is unfortunate that after so many years of architectural designs, we have distanced ourselves from nature and look at what is happening to our survival. Within our ignorance, greed, and desire for comforts, we have abandoned Mother Nature and forgotten our roots, where we come from by destroying our rivers, taking down trees, dishonoring the very air that keeps us alive. The time has come to realign ourselves and the homes that provide a roof over our heads and dive deep into Vastu.
